What would the experts do with a lottery jackpot?
Uncle Jim - There's nothing hard hearted about your assessment of deductions and charitable donations. Deductions are great if they're for money you either needed or wanted to spend anyway, but giving away $1 and saving 35 to 45 cents on your taxes leaves you with 55 to 65 cents less than you started with. That's just simple math and math has no feelings. In figuring how much I would actually get from a substantial win I just assume that as a practical matter I'd pay the maximum rate on all of

What would the experts do with a lottery jackpot?
@Chewie:
I agree. As I said I would buy (and stash some) some gold. But why limit it to only gold? Diamonds (and other jewels) have timeless value too and they are a hell of a lot smaller and portable than gold. And easier to dispose of too.
@KY Floyd:
You do have an excellent point about inflation. If there is a flaw in my plan it is that my plan really doesn't account well for inflation. Well at least not as well as I think it should. Again...the limited stock market investme

N.C. Lottery officials mum on payout of first tickets
$1, $2 and $5 scratch-off games now printing for March 30 debut
Scratch-off tickets for North Carolina's first lottery games will range in cost from $1 to $5, lottery officials said Tuesday.
Lottery director Tom Shaheen shared this and a few other details about the games after a lottery commissioners meeting Tuesday.
But Shaheen balked when reporters asked him details about the games, such as what the biggest payout would be for a scratch-off ticket.
If I tell you what it's about, i

Is the Lottery (PB/MM) corrupt?
The manager of the Texas lottery over Drawings, said Gtech has control of all terminals switches. Yes the comment by CSFB about after the game is drawn can a terminal produce the winning numbers yes Gtech can. There is not one central button that shuts off each terminal. Its kinda like your lights, or water. They can shut off your lights if you don't pay the bill from their terminal. This does not shut off everyone elses lights. Every person that went to the polls and voted for a State lo

A look back at the North Carolina lottery in 2005
After a more than 20-year battle, lawmakers needed a tie-breaker to finally pass their lottery bill. When they got it, opponents quickly cried out. I think we have one senator at home recently being hospitalized in bed we have another one who is on his honeymoon because he postponed it, said N.C. Sen. Andrew Brock, R-Davie.But N.C. Gov. Mike Easley, a long time lottery supporter, praised the new state game. Today I sign the North Carolina Education Lottery Bill and today we begin building one N

Lottery winner claims simplicity is key to happy life
Jim Hall from Troy, New York says he's the same man he was before he hit the New York Lottery for $65 million five years ago. I'm still the same miserable (SOB) I always was, he said as we kicked back on his porch on a wet Friday night.Jim is a big man with a deep voice and lifetime memberships in the National Rifle Association and Safari International. He's got the firepower to prove it.But there's a softness the laid-back 67-year-old can't hide. You can see it in the house Jim and Vivian, his

Kentucky lottery players try to beat the odds
This is the first story in a four-part series on the Kentucky lottery and its local and state impactMost members of James Carrier's family have earned their largely modest income from the soil. But there is one relative of the retired Crab Orchard area farmer who a little more than a decade ago planted a seed that turned her into a millionaire.The seed, in this case, came not from a farm supply shop but from a convenience store.Back in 1994, one of Carrier's aunts, Beverly Pitt, also of Crab O
