$2.5M Indiana lottery ticket found in the nick of time
Eric White didn't realize he'd left $2.5 million sitting on the desk in the office in his Indianapolis home for six months. On Friday, he and his wife, Lori, cashed in, beating the odds by turning in the winning Hoosier Lotto ticket from the Aug. 19 drawing a week after the lottery officials said the prize wouldn't be awarded because the 180-day deadline had passed. Officials extended the deadline to Feb. 22 after saying the date had been miscalculated. Lori White, 38, said she sent her hu

Iowa court says man can't collect casino winnings
A man who won more than $9,000 at an Iowa casino can't collect his winnings because he was banned from the casino 10 years earlier, the state Supreme Court ruled Friday. The court found that Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona had the authority to withhold winnings from a person who had been involuntary excluded. The case involved Troy Blackford, who won $9,387 on May 5, 2006. Because of the size of the jackpot, Prairie Meadows had to issue a W-2 immediately for tax purposes.

Lottery Jackpot: Etiquette for Becoming Embarrassingly Rich
Enjoy Miss Manners Q A : Etiquette for Becoming Embarrassingly Rich No Worries EddessaKnight Dear Miss Manners, Some friends and I were discussing what we would do in the unlikely event that any of us won the lottery, and find we need to appeal to you on one major question that came up. What is the etiquette involved in suddenly becoming embarrassingly rich? Of course, we all agreed that none of us would flaunt it, but the fact remains that, even if one accepted the winnings an

First Kentucky Lottery drawing machine donated to historical society
The Kentucky Historical Society has taken posession from the Kentucky Lottery Corporation of a unique piece of state history the machine used to conduct the first legal lottery drawing of the 20th century in the Commonwealth. The Beitel Criterion machine, widely seen on televised drawings, was used for Lotto Kentucky (the first numbers game offered in the state) and Cash 5 drawings from 1989 through 1993. During that time more than $350 million in prizes were awarded through drawings using th

Do you play your LP member numbers in your lottery games?
Do you play your Lottery Post member numbers in your lottery games? My LP member number is 77509 I'm thinking that it is a great number for PA Quinto. It has interesting possibilities for Pick 3 and Pick 4 as well. If you have considered playing your LP member numbers, what are some of your number possibilities? What are your states' past results using those numbers? Numbers assigned to us often carry strong and interesting energies like: birth dates, social

The identity of the recent $333M winner in MM
Why has the New York Lottery not divulged the identity or any detail of the recent split $333M winner (not even so far as to say whether it's a trust or corporation or whatever)? These are the reasons I've come up with: A. There's a dispute between parties as to the ticket's ownership/split. B. It's suspected to be stolen since claimant can't confirm time of purchase. C. Claimant lost the ticket but can still prove it otherwise (a receipt). D. Ticket is damaged, so they a

Live drawing fluke puts Maryland lottery machine maker in spotlight
When it comes to Florida Lottery games, the Ping-Pong balls get all the attention. They carry the numbers that determine if players of games such as Lotto, Fantasy 5 and Cash 3 are winners. Few people pay attention to the machines used to select the balls. At least, not until something goes wrong, as happened last week when a Lotto ball was selected... and then fell back into the machine's mixing chamber. In an instant, the machine, manufactured by Garron Lottery Products in Baltimore,

Lottery winner picks up check, then gets arrested
$4.4M lotto winner goes straight to jail It was a good news, bad news day for Barry Shell. The good news: he won more than $4 million. The bad news: he ended up in jail. Shell, from Brampton, Ontario, picked up a check for $4,377,298, the top prize in the July 18 draw for the Lotto 6/49. I went to the store and checked my ticket on the self-serve ticket checker, Shell was quoted as saying in a news release from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. As soon as I saw how muc

Joint task force created to stop Jamaica lottery scams
The feds are cracking down on Jamaican lottery scams, which bilked Americans out of more than $30 million last year, authorities said Tuesday. The brazen con artists are transforming the tropical getaway into a fraudsters paradise pulling in untraceable cash to finance the drug and gun trades with impunity, officials said. It's just an incredible amount of money that's coming down here, said Vance Callender, an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement attache at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston.
