Container garden [this & That]

Have not done much in the container garden this past week. Been cutting out and uprooting plants this week that are finished for the season. The yellow cherry tomatoes look like the sucker branches with flower clusters are not setting fruit. Temperatures in the nineties and plants do not set fruit that well at high temps.

The butternut squash plants look healthy and flowering. Have to wait and see if they will set fruit at high temperatures.

The young yellow and zucchini squash plants are surviving. The Siberian tomato plant seedlings are doing well. Have about five Charleston bell pepper seedlings which are surviving. Maybe get a fall harvest out of those plants.

The four flower plants on the shepherds pole in front of the house are taking a beating with this hot weather. Checked the potting mix temperature in those flower pails and it is 90 degrees and higher. Soil temp too hot. I will just water them until they kick the pail.Green laugh

I will wait until end of August or first part of September to do fall flowers.

This & That [counter top]

Yesterday I worked out those spots that did not shine with the burlap cloth. Done that about three or four times during the day rubbing all the top surface. No dull spots when finished and the counter top was nice and smooth. Sun Smiley

Put one coat of paste wax on this morning, let it dry and wiped it off. DONE Cheers  I am satisfied with it. Getting enough pans like cake baking pans to set the liquid bottles in used for laundry. Do not want drip over onto the top. Felt the bottom of the liquid soap bottle and it had liquid on the bottom. Will put the felt pads in each bottom corner of the pans to keep the pans off the counter and from sliding around. The round felt pads where you peel off the sticky back of the felt pad to attach it to what you want. Already have those on hand.

Time for a nap. My leg muscles ache today for some reason. Could be from the exercise or arthritis acting up.

This & That

I see a boring week ahead. Running out of projects. OHHH, I have one project I have been putting off for years is sorting through all my paper work that has accumulated up to this time. The shredders a going to be buzzing and humming this week. Just keep what is important.

All my tools and stuff in the garage needs sorting out too.

I am getting a head ache just thinking about it. Surrender

Went out this morning for my chew of tabakyJester and coffee. Pulled up one end of the plastic tent over the counter top for a look see. The top was dry so I folded back the plastic and pinned it to the back wall. Looked over the counter top and back splash. The back splash should have been palm sanded to smooth out the raised grain. So the back splash is going to stay the way it is. Still have some spots on the counter top that do not look glossy from the poly. I cut a piece of burlap about 12 x 8 inches and laid that flat on the counter and placed a cleaning rag over it and folded it in making a burlap sander. Burlap is a mild abrasive which does not leave scratch marks like sand paper. Spent some time with the burlap sander to smooth out the counter top surface. Now I am debating whether to give the counter top another coat of poly to have a full glossy finish when looking across the top at eye level.

Decisions sure are hard some times.Bang Head

This & That

Got up this morning about 0:615 and had my coffee with a chew of tobaky. Looked at the counter top and felt the surface and it needed sanding and another coat of poly. Sanded the top down with the 220 grit sandpaper pulling the dust off with a cloth as I went. Got the sanding finished and had another chew of tobaky. Felt tired and went in and went to bed and slept another couple hours.

Woke up about 10:45. Yep had another chew of tobaky. While chewing I was figuring out what to do with the dust problem. Sooo I got the vacuum out and ready to go. Got four pieces of wood about ten inches long and one and one half inches wide. I attached one on each end of the cabinet facing out on an angle to be above the cabinet. Then done the same for each end. On the ones facing out I drilled a small hole near the top on each end. Had a small roll of wire and strung that across the front leaving one end unattached. Got the painters plastic drop cloth that we had that was unused and cut that to length leaving about three foot extra on each end and where it dropped down the front. Got out my push pins and pinned the plastic to the back wall about sixteen inches up. Folded the plastic from the front to the back and tacked it to the wall to be out of the way.

Turned off the big floor fan and took the vacuum and done the floor and other areas I could catch with the vac hose including the counter top. Took my cloth rag and moistened it with mineral spirits and wiped the counter top down. Had a chew of tobaky.Big Grin After the chew I closed all the doors, stirred the polyurethane and took my two inch brush and applied it to the counter top. Capped the can, set the brush aside and took the loose end of the wire attaching it to the end. Folded down my plastic drop cloth over the front and sides attaching it with push pins as I went. Sealed up the counter top best as possible with the plastic tent. Went and cleaned the brush. Left the fan off and kept the doors closed except when I go out to chew tobakyGreen laugh.

Later this afternoon I lifted the plastic on my chewin tobakyCrazy end and took a peek across the top at the cabinet level. Still see some spots that need another coat. May do just the top next time and not the back splash or the edge molding. Do that tomorrow.

Time to go have another chew of tobakyNo No before dinner is served.

This & That

Went to store this morning and purchased four sheets of 220 grit sandpaper, one can of fine wood paste wax and a one pound roll of rags. Got home and sanded the newly stained counter top. Made that dust free and applied the polyurethane. Cleaned my brush and that was it for today on that project. While sitting in the chair next to the counter top having a nice chew of tobaky I looked across the counter top at eye level and seen where the poly absorbed into the wood more. Standing up looking at the counter top I can not see where the poly absorbed in more. Tomorrow I will lightly sand the top and remove the dust. Then give the counter top another coat of poly. Will give a third coat if need be the next day.

Then I went to the gym this afternoon. Did not go yesterday as I was busy with the counter top.

This & That

Something different.

I have been debating for along time on what to do with the cabinet top I made about 11 years ago and painted. The laundry cabinet I made is 5 feet long and 23 inches deep with no doors on the front and one shelf 12 inches deep to the  back of the cabinet running 3/4 of the length of the cabinet. I used 3/4 inch finish plywood for the top with a molding installed on the edge to cover the laminate layers exposed. I then painted the top.

So I was considering all sorts of different options and finally decided to stain the top. How was I going to do that with paint on it! I removed the plywood top from the cabinet and removed the trim edging. Purchased new unfinished edging moulding, light colored stain and a small pack of 4d nails. Flipped the top over exposing the unfinished side of the cabinet top. Sanded the unfinished side all down and reinstalled the top fastening it down. Cut and installed the new moulding [1/2 x 3/4 oak shoe  moulding] putting the rounded edge up. The old top had no back splash board. It just butted the drywall. I cut a 1 x 5 new board the length of the top installing shoe moulding on top of that. Pre stained the back splash and installed that. Then I stained the top and the new edging finishing that today. I will let the stain dry good and then will coat with polyurethane. Let that dry real good and then put a coating of table top or furniture wax on it. They sell a special wax I seen for that. Forgot the name of it. Should look real nice when finished.

So with only about $12.00 spent and a few hours of work I end up with a new counter top for the laundry cabinet.

I am already happy with the looks of it with just the stain on it. Just looked at my purchase receipt and I purchased one quart Minwax wood finish golden pecan. I only used just a smidgen of the stain.

I was thinking about building a free standing cabinet for the kitchen for extra storage and I may as well finish the cabinet with the stain and poly coat it and the waxing it. The cabinet will be about six feet tall, about 20 inches wide and 16 inches deep with no door. I have been thinking about building that for quite awhile.

Container garden [this & That]

I went to the garden center today to pick up a spray bottle of liquid copper fungicide. Paid $6.00 for a 24 oz spray bottle of it. While I was there I spotted a 1 pint container of copper fungicide that was obviously a concentrated bottle of it. It makes up to 45 gallons of fungicide. It was about $9.00 for the one pint concentrate. I looked on the other side of the aisle and seen one gallon sprayers for $9.00 each.
It would take just a little over five 24 oz bottles to equal a gallon of the fungicide for a total of about $30.00 a gallon. So I could buy the concentrate and the one gallon sprayer for $18.00. That would give me about 45 gallons of fungicide at a cost value of $1,350.00 for a cash outlay of $18.00. Green laugh

I also purchased a Torenia flower plant while I was there. I just could not resist it.

So I got home and after supper I went to the laundry room and sprayed my arms with bug repellent rubbing it around with my hands and while my hands were moist with the repellent rubbed behind my ears. From there I went out and sprayed plants with the fungicide and then transplanted the Torenia plant into a flower pail. Picked off more infected peppers and threw them away.

Container garden [this & That]

Went out today and finished the last zucchini like I did the others. While I was out there I decided to go ahead and transplant the yellow butter squash. I cut out one big boy tomato plant that was all done for the season. Took the tall cage I had for the big boy tomato and snipped it in half leaving the bottom portion of the cage attached to the container. I took the top portion of the chimney and fastened it to a five gallon bucket for the yellow butter squash plant. I also took short stakes and staked the squash plants into a vertical position.

I think I may lose the butternut squash plants as the leaves are dying off. I think the powder I used to put on them is causing the leaves to die. Says on the can not to use it during hot weather for squash and other plants. It contains 25% sulphur. I will use a mix my daughter made up for diseases. Just spray it on. some formula she found on the net. Will use that on the zucchini and yellow butter squash also.

Pretty much caught up again except for taking up the last two ground boxes behind the fence. I have two soya cukes to get and a couple big boy tomatoes to get yet before I take up the ground boxes.

I think I am waiting to long before picking the vine ripe tomatoes. I waited to fully ripe and found they had split open at the stem and went to he!!. I will pick my last three or four big boy tomatoes about 3/4 vine ripe to keep them from splitting.

The sucker branches on the yellow cherry tomato plants I let grow now have 5 flower clusters on the two plants.May get a second harvest from the two yellow cherry tomato plants after all.
