The gym exercise chronicles

Stopped at the gym today while I was out running errands.

Done some diverging lat pull downs.

Done some lateral raises to build up the deltoids.

Rode a bike type exercise for 15 minutes to build those muscles.

Container garden [this & That]

Went out to check on the container vegetables today and see that I have three big boy tomatoes which will be fully vine ripened for picking tomorrow. The lower sucker stems on the yellow cherry tomato plants are growing well.

Looked at my peppers which have fruited and discovered one of the purple peppers was soft and mushy. Picked it off and threw it on the ground. Was thinking about it and came to the conclusion it cooked right on the vine. The pepper was exposed to the direct sunlight with day time temperatures in the nineties right now. I have a garden hose laying on the ground going to the deck and when I turn it on I need to let it run a bit as the water in the hose heats up to at least 110 degrees. Put my hand under the water when I turn it on and feel the hot water. Imagine what temperature the moisture in the pepper on the plant gets up to being exposed to the sunlight.

May have an eggplant for harvest in about a week. The eggplant produced better than I expected. I have about six eggplant growing now with more flowers that started to show fruit. Will have some eggplant Parmesan.

I have one yellow tomato that will be vine ripe by tomorrow. That plant only produced about three tomatoes. All that work for three tomatoes.

The cucumber plant in the deck container has one more cuke on it and I do not see very many flowers on it. Will use that container for zucchini squash when they come up.

My gym exercise chronicles

To know what muscles I have been working on I have kept a log in the past on what exercises I do along with what the weight is set at and how many repetitions I do at that time. No record today as I did not take some index cards with me or a pencil. I lost my old records from over a year ago since I was there last.

I will get some index cards and start a record again.

Just from today's memory I done these today. bat swing while sitting down  25 lbs twenty repetitions each side, Abdominal crunch 100 lbs 50 reps, arm curl 40 lbs 20 reps, pec fly 100 lbs forward and reverse 20 reps each, pull down 80 lbs about thirty reps,  Leg equipment sitting down 40 lbs 50 reps in 50 reps out. Leg extension 40 lbs twenty reps up twenty reps down. That is all I can remember right now.

For reference on what muscles I am working on when I do different exercises here is a muscle anatomy chart.

Container garden [this & That]

Just came in a short time ago from planting the Siberian tomato seeds. Also decided to plant about six or eight Charleston Bell pepper seed for the fall peppers I spoke about which I had seed for.

I took two six inch pots I had and filled them with container mix up to about 1 1/2 inches from the top. Added seed starting mix leaving room for the seed depth required. Planted the seeds and covered with seed starting mix.

One pot tomatoes the other pot peppers. When it comes time to transplant I will just separate the plants in the pot.

Time to mosey on over to the gym for about an hour of exercise.

Container garden [fall tomatoes]

Decided to go with the Siberian tomato for my fall tomato crop. I already have the seeds and will plant the seeds tomorrow.

The Siberian tomato are cool weather tolerant for setting fruit. I checked the average monthly temperature for my area. They should be a go if I get the seeds in now.

Start about four seeds.  One in each starting container.

This & That

Yesterday I went and signed up for the gym again. Have not been there in almost a year.

At least when I go to the gym they have a lot of exercise equipment I can use sitting down. I have been getting a fair amount of exercise the past year setting up for the container garden but I got to move around too much on my feet with my arthritis and bad hip needing constant use of a cane. My blog tells the story of what I have been doing setting up the container garden.

Now that I have lost forty pounds in the past year or so dieting with intentions of at least twenty five more taking me down to 185 pounds my body could use some fine tuning of muscles.

Build up my upper body and arm muscles along with leg muscle strengthening exercises.

I done about one half hour of exercises yesterday and today my right hip did not feel as sore as usual.

I did not go today to the gym. Took apart the three wooden ground boxes I took up and boxed that to go to the recycling center. Plus I wa puttering around in the container garden.

May start a blog entry series on progress report with my body building. Jack-in-the-Box

Container garden [this & That]

Out on the patio this afternoon with the Velcro garden tape tying off pepper and eggplant branches that had fruit on them to their stake for added support.

The acorn squash seeds are up.

Had the snips with me for cutting the Velcro tape so I trimmed off dying foliage on the tomato plants. Seen some yellow cherry suckers that came out on the lower part of the plant. Leaving those to see if they will grow branch stems long enough for a second crop. there are three or four suckers on the plant at the lower level. Was looking at the sucker branch where it came out next to the main stem and leaf branch. I decided to cut off the leaf branch about one inch away from the main stem leaving the sucker shoot. Figure it will direct more plant energy to the sucker at that point. There are enough leaf branches left on the plant to collect the suns energy for the plant.

Debating whether to yank up the cuke plant in the wooden deck container when the yellow or zucchini squash plants are tall enough and plant a squash plant in the former cuke box. May take the six foot tall cuke chimney and cut it in half with the heavy duty wire cutter which will give me an extra three foot cage for the squash plant in a bucket or container. I do not plan on cukes again needing a tall cage.

I will not grow the big boy tall tomato plants again either. Choose a tomato plant that does not grow as tall.

Not much going on.

The curly parsley has three stalk branches left on it. Cut three today for my salad. I had transplanted it a few days ago from the butternut squash bin into one of the 2 1/2 gallon pails and it took well and survived. There are new shoots growing on it so I figure another crop off of that plant.

The butternut squash plants are doing well.

The seeds I planted of squash I spoke about have not peeked out and seen what the world looks like yet.

Took the two step stepladder out this afternoon to reach the top of the yellow cherry tomato plant to pick some ripe ones.

Decided not to build another wooden box for squash. The box will take about ten gallons of container mix with dimension of 15 x 15 inch inside measure and 12 inches tall. Will purchase TWO five gallon pails instead. One plant in a five gallon pail should survive in that space.

Until next time.

Going to go have supper with my salad containing curly parsley, yellow cherry tomatoes two leaves of lettuce a potion of soya cucumber sprinkled with Parmesan and Romano cheese. Plus salad dressing.

Container garden [tomato suckers]

I think the more fruit a plant has I need to maintain enough ferlizerBig Grin nutrients to feed the extra plant growth and extra fruit.

I remember back on the farm my father use to grow tomatoes by the acre and he never pruned his plants.

Looks like I will not be pruning my tomatoes next time. Planting only one or two plants for my container gardening I would like to get as much fruit as possible per container.

Wellll,

Yesterday I went behind the back fence and took up four ground boxes. I have the three wooden ones I made that were actually 16 inch square outside dimension and 6 inches tall. The other one was the plastic pan about 14 inches square and 6 inches tall which is going in the garbage can, The wooden ones I am going to disassemble and maybe build a wooden deck container for one of the squash plants that I planted seed for last week which are not up yet. Would like three each of the yellow squash and zucchini. Everyone in the family eats those and they produce quite a few squash per plant if they are healthy. I took the ground box soil and spread it over tree roots sticking up on the lawn Still have two ground boxes behind the fence. One with the soya cukes and one with the big boy tomato plants in them.

The two big boy tomato plants and the one yellow tomato plant plus the sweet million tomato plant in deck containers did not produce much fruit. About six tomatoes on each plant. Probably because I kept the sucker branches trimmed off. The yellow cherry plants produced a fair amount of fruit even though I trimmed the suckers on those also. When I trimmed the yellow cherry tomato plant I stuck the cutting in container mix to root. They are about six inches high. I will let them grow without trimming the sucker branches this time to bear more fruit. I will not let them grow as tall either. Will top them off at about four feet.

The sweet million tomato plant is in a bucket and I plan on yanking it up and use that container for one squash plant.

Dusted the butternut squash plants and the two eggplants yesterday which started to get ate up by bugs.
