Container garden [this & That]

Yesterday 7/11 I purchased three five gallon pails at Home Deepooo. Brought them home and drilled a bunch of holes in them. Made platforms for each pail to sit on from the saved lumber from the ground boxes I took up. Took them out to the patio and filled two of the five gallon pails with potting mix that was in the 2 1/2 gallon buckets that were not being used. Took both pails and dumped the potting mix in a pile and mixed it up returning the potting mix to the two pails.

Today I went out and mounted the five gallon buckets to the platforms with screws so they would not get bumped around or off the platforms. Took my heavy duty wire cutters and cut the tall chimney in the cuke box into three sections leaving one section on the cuke box. Took the two remaining chimneys and mounted them to the top of the two five gallon pails. Then I took the grinding wheel I purchased and smoothed the cut edges on those three chimneys plus a couple other chimneys. I have about a thirty inch chimney for each zucchini container.

Tonight after supper I went out and transplanted two zucchini plants having one in a five gallon bucket and the other one in the former cuke box leaving the third zucchini plant in the deck container I started the seeds in. Then I put ferlizerBig Grin and bone meal around the two I transplanted plus I installed a burlap mat on those two containers, Started to work on the Zucchini plant I left in the container to add ferlizerBig Grin  and install the burlap mat but it had a thunder shower come in abruptly so I wrapped it up real quick putting away the supplies before it rained real hard. Will finish the third zucchini container tomorrow.

The yellow butter squash are growing nicely and I will transplant those next week.

My Charleston bell pepper seeds have sprouted. The Siberian tomato seedlings are doing fine.

It is getting into mid summer now and the container mix is drying out at an advanced rate.

Have not been to the gym in two days as I have been busy with the container garden. Will hit the gym tomorrow for about an hour. Only takes me about an hour at the gym to do my choice of exercises for that day.

Really a quite simple tracking code for the lottery numbers in groups.

Plus I work the ascending order lottery digit by position tracking. That is just a visual thing to know where the digits are by ascending order position.

Container garden [this & That]

Summer squash are up. The variety I planted is called "Butter Dish". 7-8 inch butter yellow fruit with mild flavor. Open plants with few spines are easy to harvest. Disease tolerant. They are container friendly in a 12 inch container. A five gallon bucket should work for them. Will transplant when they are up a couple inches.

I got to thinking about why the first set of zucchini and summer squash did not come up. They were last years seed purchase and I could have been watering them too much. I purchased new seed this time around and paid more attention to how much water to use.

I have my five pepper plants in 2 1/2 gallon pails which dry out quick. I went out today and covered the top completely with burlap mats to control evaporation from the top. The pails are plastic so there should be no evaporation from the sides or bottoms except where I have holes drilled.

Went out this evening and dusted the butternut squash plants for bugs and disease. Used dual purpose dust in same can. The last time I used the dust container it came in I had a difficult time controlling the amount of dust coming out. I got thinking about when I was back on the farm when I use to help my father dust plants and remembered we used a bag to shake on the dust. What I did with my one pound dust container is opened up the top side with the large opening for pouring out. I took a piece of burlap and folded it onto itself creating a double thick layer. Folded it onto the shaker can and held the burlap on with a strong rubber band. Went and dusted the squash that way. The dust shakes out giving just a fine dusting where applied. Just work the can a little bit and when the burlap appeared to be plugged I tapped the can with a short stick to loosen the dust plug in the burlap. Used recommended safety precautions while using the dust.

I did not think much of the acorn squash plants being in the butternut squash box. Yanked them out and threw them away. ThudNo big deal or loss.

Container garden [this & That]

The zucchini squash are up. have about four plants. Will let them get up a couple inches before I transplant them into individual containers.
I had went to the Home Depot on July 5th and purchased a packet of straight neck yellow squash which are container friendly. Also purchased a packet of Swiss chard seed for planting in late August. Can not remember ever eating much Swiss chard. They say Swiss chard is quite tasty. Planted the yellow squash seed on same day of purchase. Hopefully they will be up in a day or two.

Transplanted the three acorn squash plants today in the squash box. I also wrapped a burlap mat around those to cut down on evaporation. I have been training the butternut squash runners to weave in and out on the wire mesh cage. Will go out tomorrow and dust the squash for bugs and disease.

The Siberian tomato seeds are up to about 3/4 inch. Maybe the Charleston bell pepper seed will sprout shortly. Have a fall crop of those. Maybe No Pity!

The suckers on the yellow cherry tomato plants appear to be doing well. Already have a flower cluster on one of the sucker branches.

Did not grind off the sharp burs on the wire chimneys yet.

Have been eating what few tomatoes that have ripened. Had a yellow tomato sliced up for supper tonight. Nice mild flavor. Did not taste acidic like a red tomato.

The peppers look to be fruiting out well. Moved the pepper plant that had a cooked pepper on it to a more shady location.

Today was the first day I took some index cards with me to the gym to keep a record of my weight settings and repetitions for any progress.
I do about eleven or twelve different exercises but not all the same day. I use to rotate back and forth on what exercises from one gym visit to the other when I went to the gym about one year ago. What ever strikes my fancy at the time and the availability of the piece of equipment I want to use.

Today I did these.

To keep track of any progress made that I am back to the gym again after a one year absence I will log my body measurements today. That is what a blog is for. A journal on what you want to post in it.

The gym exercise chronicles

Found the piece of equipment I use. Did not know the name of it and when I went to the gym this morning I wrote the name of the manufacturer down.
I rode it for ten minutes on level five.
Really a comfortable piece of equipment for me to use with my bad right hip. Really great for my leg exercises as I can not walk very far without my hip becoming painful. I am suppose to be using this type of equipment for my COPD lung exercises also.

Container garden [this & That]

Went out and picked the ripe tomatoes today.

I dug into the area in the two deck containers where I planted the yellow and zucchini squash seed and found the seeds never germinated. Planted the seed on June 22nd, 12 days ago. Only one yellow squash seed came up. While at the market today I purchased a packet of fordhook zucchini squash seeds and planted about five seeds. They did not have any yellow squash seeds in the seed rack. The one seed that did come up is a yellow squash. So I will end up with three or four zucchini plants and one yellow squash plant. Not going to buy anymore yellow squash seed this year.

While at Home Depot yesterday I purchased a grinding cylinder with the grinding stone measuring 3/4 diameter by 1 1/2 inch long attached to a 1/4 inch shank 1/1/2 inches long. I got that to attach to my electric drill to grind off the sharp points on the metal chimneys [cages] I made. When I cut the chimney wire with the heavy duty wire cutter left a sharp edge where it was cut. Raked myself a few times on the sharp points. When I made the chimneys I also cut the metal wire to create a larger opening than 6 x 6 to reach in with my soil meters and easier to spread ferlizerBig Grin around. Those sharp points are nasty when I pass my arm over them by mistake. They draw blood too.P***ed I will be going out tomorrow or Friday and do some grinding.
