Winner has a personal rule for playing certain lottery numbers

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. — A Maryland man stuck to a personal method of selecting lottery numbers for a Pick 5 drawing — derived using license plates — and won $100,000 in a single Pick 5 drawing.

One Maryland lottery player took inspiration from his environment and doubled down on his chosen Pick 5 numbers, earning himself $100,000 in the process.

Days before Christmas, the anonymous Prince George County resident said he kept seeing the same numbers popping up on license plates and made a mental note of which ones.

The security guard was out doing some shopping before the holidays this past December and stopped at Royal Food Mart on Livingston Road in Fort Washington to buy some holiday-themed scratch-off tickets as gifts for family and friends.

He couldn't shake the feeling he got from his observation earlier, so he decided to buy two identical Pick 5 tickets with the combination 25121 for the Dec. 20 drawing.

"If you see a number three or four times, play it," he told the Maryland Lottery. "You just might get it."

The tickets went forgotten until early January when he remembered to check them, and that was when he realized both had matched all five numbers in the midday drawing.

"I know how much that is," the winner had thought at the time.

Matching all five numbers in exact order awards a $50,000 top prize, and having two identical tickets meant he doubled his total take-home to $100,000.

An injury delayed his ability to claim the prize in person, but he finally made it to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on March 6 to collect his winnings.

It's his biggest lottery win yet, but he was hesitant to share the news with more than one person.

"I keep it to myself," he explained.

With the winnings, he plans on paying medical bills and purchasing a used car.

For selling the two top prize-winning tickets, the retailer receives a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.

The odds of winning the top prize in Pick 5 by matching all five winning numbers in exact order are 1 in 100,000. Drawings take place twice a day at 12:28 p.m. and 7:56 p.m. EST.

All winning numbers, prizes, and odds are published on Lottery Post's Maryland Lottery Results page right after each drawing.

If I saw a number sequence or set of digits repeating , I'd play a ticket on it but not twice.

 Congrats to the 2x winner

That's a smart move right there buddy, knocking down debt and not getting into new debt is the way to go.

Wishing you good health and fewer medical bills in the future 🙏

I do the same thing. Except my state doesn't have a pick 5. I use certain words to play the numbers. If I see WIN, BET, or EAT on a plate, I'll extract the four numbers to play.
